Let's start off with Urban Dictionary's definition of DARK ROMANCE:  A sub-genre of romance that contains controversial themes throughout the plot or characters with questionable morale and background.  This can also be described as the' villain love interest' trope manifesting into a genre.   

Reader A: I'm looking for a book with a love story between a dangerous hero with questionable intentions and a strong, morally grey heroine.

Reader B: I think you'd enjoy dark romance books. Specifically by Tillie Cole, KC Rice or K. Webster. 

Why dark romances? According to The Ink Plots, the sub-genre Dark Romance will push the indie niche and become a dominate force in 2026. With readers searching for intense, emotional, and morally gray stories, as a way to escape the humdrum of their everyday lives. "It's a safe way to exhibit the dark desires and fantasies hidden behind our everyday facade."- states A Dark Romance Reader of nearly twenty years. "I've been searching out and reading dark romance long before it became dark romance, and believe me the genre was not as welcoming as it is today." 

The dark romance genre have been used to describe novels such as Fifty Shades of Grey to Retribution, with best selling authors like:  Christina Lauren,  Penelope Douglas, and Anne Rice, though she's best known for her vampire stories, in between those pages, she magnificently combines dark elements with raw desire, drawing the reader into the character's struggles and deepest desires. 

And the year, 2026 introduces a new indie to the list of dark romance authors. KC Rice, author of  Tattered Series, Under His Protection, Sleeping with the Enemy: A Political Thriller Romance, and Retribution: A cartel Romance, all of which carry the sub-genre of Dark Romance. And let's not forget- Estranged: Blood Moon, a paranormal "dark" romance, and Empty Nest Antics, a perfect mix of romance and comedy for the midlife ladies experiencing the "joys" of menopause and everything that goes with it. 

To say Dark Romance is the new go to genre for escapism and fantasy, is saying it mildly. While the story plots are similar to romance novels, they certainly don't hesitate nor are they afraid to venture off into a world of dark, lustful, unimaginative stories that keep the reader's hearts burning until their next dark romance.
